  • NEW Three Section Approach – A new Three Section Approach divides each chapter into three distinct sections: Concepts, Accounting Applications, and Business Applications. This approach modularizes the content in a logical way that mirrors how instructors teach the course.
  • NEW Overall Structure – Based on extensive market feedback, the text was reorganized and the chapters were re-named to better align with the balance sheet presentation. Some of the most significant changes included the following:
    • Refocusing the accounting cycle chapters (e.g., moved coverage of things like the chart of accounts earlier) From the previous cash and receivables chapter (POA 11e Chapter 9), combined cash coverage with internal controls (POA 12e Chapter 8) and created a separate receivables chapter (POA 12e Chapter 9) Combined the contributed capital chapter (POA 11e Chapter 12) and the corporate income statement and statement of stockholders' equity chapters (POA 11e Chapter 14) into one chapter on accounting for corporations (POA 12e Chapter 13)
    • Streamlined and combined the introduction to managerial accounting chapter (POA 11e Chapter 18) and cost concepts and cost allocation chapters (POA 11e Chapter 19) into one more comprehensive chapter introducing managerial accounting (POA 12e Chapter 17)
    • Streamlined and combined the short-run decision analysis chapter (POA 11e Chapter 27) and the capital budgeting chapter (POA 11e Chapter 28) into a single chapter (POA 12e Chapter 25)
  • NEW Business Transaction Model – Building off of work done in the previous edition of FA, a new business transaction model for all financial accounting chapters involving transactions has been added. This model visually guides students step-by-step through accounting for business transactions.
  • NEW Ratio Analysis Model – Implementing reviewer comments, this edition improves upon the framework for teaching how to analyze company information and make informed decisions using ratio analysis developed for the previous edition of FA. This model simplifies ratio analysis by focusing on the elements of the financial statements that are needed to compute the ratio.
  • NEW TriLevel Problems – Each chapter opens with a Business Insight that shows how a small company would use accounting information to make decisions. The Business Insight poses three questions – each of which will be answered in one of the three sections of the chapter. At the end of each chapter, a NEW TriLevel Problem revisits the Business Insight company and answers the questions posed there to tie the three sections together. The TriLevel Problems replaces the previous Review Problem and received very positive feedback in the market.
  • Improved End-of-Chapter Assignments - All chapter assignment have been revised to link back to chapter content under the Three Section Approach.
  • Reduced Page Count – Through a combination of streamlining efforts in the narrative of each chapter and a tightened design, we've reduced the overall page count of the book by nearly 100 pages.
